How important is academics to a student
athlete? Very, it will determine what you will do with the
rest of your life when you’re collegiate or for some
professional days are over.
99% of athletes will not get a chance to
play professionally; athletes need to figure out which
school will provide them with the best education that will
set them up for their careers after sports. Some athletes
will get the chance to play until their 20’s but after that
you will most likely be working, so you need to give
yourself a solid foundation.
Before enrolling in university you should
have some sort of idea what you want to study. Plenty of
first year students go to university not know what they want
to study, if you take classes in areas that interest you,
you will be able to help yourself out. If you’re interested
in technology then at least you have a good feel for what
program you want to get into. Once you know what interest
you, you can start to research programs at different
schools.
When I enrolled in at the
University of Houston as a
student athlete, I was shocked to learn how much academic
support I was given. It is very hard to flunk out of school
as a student athlete because of all the support you are
given. Most schools set up tutoring, study halls, reviewing
all your work; it gives you the best chance at succeeding in
the classroom.
Another factor that you should weigh is
what can the program do for you? Will they help you find
employment after college? Does the academic program offer
internships? Will they put you in front of alumni that can
give you a job when you graduate?
Lots of athletes go to college and take
the easy way out. What I mean by that is they take classes
that just keep them eligible to play. Trust me as a former
student-athlete I understand how hard school and athletics
can be but it’s vital that you take your education
seriously. Sports will come and go but your education is
something that they can never take away from you. Let
