School is out and its time for summer vacation. While
most high school students are heading to the beach, as a student-athlete your summer is spent going to
various colleges attending their
summer camps.
Summer camps should be called recruiting camps because
that is all they're used for by college coaches. They're an
extremely important part of the recruiting process.
The purpose of these camps is to give coaches the
opportunity to evaluate players, not only on how well
they play but on what kind of person they’re like.
Done right, a college camp can also be a great benefit
to you the basketball or football player, they give
you the opportunity to display your talents for a
college
coach. They also give you the opportunity to evaluate
a coach to see if
you like his coaching style.
If you have a chance to
attend a college camp, I
encourage you to go, but make sure that you are in the best
physical shape of your life. If you have a list of
different colleges that have asked you to attend their
camp, you might not be able to attend them all so you
need to ask yourself a few key questions:
-
Which coach needs to see me play the most? This
can be coaches at schools far away from you, who
have never seen you play in person. It can also be the school that
is at the top of your recruiting list.
-
Which camp is going to get me the greatest amount of
exposure? Some college camps have coaches from various
schools attend their camp. If you can go to a camp and
have more than one school evaluate your talent then
the benefit of attending that camp just went up.
In the end there will be some college camps
that you will get invited to attend but can’t attend.
Make sure that you
email the coach and tell him that
you would love to attend his camp and that you are
honored to get invited, but you can’t attend for
whatever reason. In the email make sure that you
express your interest in the school and ask what can you
do instead of making the camp.
Summer recruiting camps are just one aspect of
the recruiting process. StudentBlitz can help you in
the other key areas that can make you earn that
athletic scholarship. Create a recruiting profile and
send it to hundreds of NCAA & NAIA programs. Fill out the form above and lets
get started on helping you reach the next level.
