Try This, Not That When Creating A Highlight Tape

I've seen hundreds of highlight tapes through the years; I've seen my fair share of outstanding videos as well as a great deal of terrible ones. We decided to write this article to help players going through the recruiting process that would like more advice on how to create a highlight tape. This advice alone can't guarantee you a scholarship but it will give you the best chance to show what you can do for a college coach.

Do This With Your Highlight Tape

  • Highlight where you are on the field or court - Never make a coach guess where you are.

  • Put your best play at the beginning of your highlight tape - One chance to make a first impression.

  • Ask your parents to film games - If your school film is terrible get someone who will do it right.

  • Quality is very important if you have to pay someone to have your film professionally done.

  • Use quality packaging for your DVD - Again you want it to be professional so that a coach has no reason not to watch it.

  • Double check maybe triple check the DVDs before you send them to coaches - What a waste of time and money to send a DVD to a coach that doesn't work.

Avoid This When Creating A Highlight Tape

  • Including every highlight - Every assist or tackle is unnecessary, try to keep your highlight under 5 minutes

  • Putting bad film on a highlight -  If the quality of the film is bad just exclude that from your highlight don't give the coach a reason to turn off your highlight film.

  • Include same play from different angle -  Your wasting a coaches time with replays and different angle shots. Unless of course you did something truly amazing

  • Write on your DVD with a marker - You want to look as professional as possible and a marker just doesn't scream professionalism.

  • Spending to much money on your highlight tape - Waste of money to spend that much and sometimes coaches will think your film is too good to be true.

  • Relying on a friend to create a highlight tape - "Johnny" is a nice guy but it's always best to have a back up plan.

If you have a highlight video ready to go and need to send it to coaches, use our coaches database to send your film to thousands of coaches from NAIA - Division I. Fill out the form above and Let The Journey To The Next Level Start Here......
